Of the 118 new enrollments who were welcomed for the Spring 2010 semester, 52 are first-year students, while 42 are on transfer and another 24 are on exchange. Following the trend from the previous semester, the international mix is rich with nationalities, but there are only 18 Bulgarians. The average TOEFL score is 98, while the average combined score on the SAT is 1096, according to a report from Yordanka Melnikliyska, director of admissions. In addition to countries who have large communities at AUBG like Albania, Belarus, Kazakhstan, Serbia, Russia, Ukraine, Mongolia, Montenegro, Armenia and Kyrgyzstan, students are also coming from countries that have not been represented before, such as Colombia. Erasmus students are coming from countries like Iceland and France. "It appears that Latvians truly like it here in Bulgaria, as people who were here previous semesters have recommended it to friends," Dean of Students Lydia Krise said. AUBG students mainly majoring in JMC, BUS and EUR went for a semester abroad.
Name: Vishal Pahel On exchange from the USA Origin: Indian Home University: Creighton University, Omaha, NE (USA) Major of Studies: Accounting & Information Systems Has lived in: Zanzibar, Nigeria, Saudi Arabia, India Why did you come to Bulgaria? For a change of scenery. What do you like here so far? The people. They are funny. And the good, cheap food. And the good beer.
"It is not that different. What matters are the people you surround yourself with." Name: Liliya Gavlashka Transfer from the USA, Junior Origin: Bulgarian University: Loyola University Chicago, then Harold Washington College (USA) Major of Studies: Journalism and Mass Communication Why did you come back to Bulgaria? It is cheaper and at that point I wanted to go to school in Bulgaria.
Name: Elisa Arnarsdottir Origin: Icelandic Home University: University of Akureyri (Iceland) Major: Social Science and Media Studies Why did you come to Bulgaria? I wanted to do something totally different. I've been to Germany and Portugal, and Bulgaria was a little bit exotic. And my friend was coming as well. I knew nothing about Bulgaria. I didn't know what to expect. That was the most exciting thing. My International Contact guy told me not to go to France or Germany, but somewhere else. Is it different from what you are used to? The most different thing here are the homeless people. We have almost none in Iceland. And the strangest thing is the pictures of dead people that you put everywhere*. And I did not expect it to be cold. What do you like here? Snowboarding in Bansko was really good. I like campus life - there is always someone to hang around with. What traditionally Bulgarian have you tried? I heard chalga and I do not like it. The Bulgarian food at a restaurant was good. I see a lot of sausages. I do not know if it is traditional. Do you plan to travel? From the pictures I have seen it looks really interesting outside Blagoevgrad. I also plan to travel to Macedonia. How do you find Bulgarians? I met some really nice people and people I do not really like. They are not really open until they start drinking. But I have made some Bulgarian friends. What is that you do not like? I hate that you are allowed to smoke in restaurants.
