![]() Photo from AUBG website Two weeks after Arben Konedarev's resigned from the position of residence hall director at Skaptopara 1, students have divided opinions. Some say he was doing a fair job, while others that he was arrogant and disrespectful towards students. Junior Marko Lubarda said Konedarev was cooperative and fair, even in cases when he [Lubarda] did not follow the rules of residence life. "I am not fond of respecting the rules and was very likely to have confrontations," Lubarda said. "But it was all on man-to-man basis. ... He [Konedarev] was lenient once in my case." He did not specify what the specific case was. Skaptopara 1 resident assistants (RAs) say Konedarev was a good professional who knew how to handle students. "He is one of the most professional people I've worked with," Dimitar Pashov, an RA for the second consecutive year, said. Pashov said he knew Konedarev would resign, sooner or later, but did not specify the reasons for his observation. "I was aware of the fact that he might not be here for long." "I am very sad," sophomore Todor Kostov, an RA in Skaptopara 1, said. "He is a great boss, a great person, and a friend of mine." However, some students said they were happy to see Konedarev leave. "He is arrogant and unprofessional and behaves disgustingly with students," senior Ivan Botev said. He added he thinks most students are aware of his behavior, but choose not to complain. "Having problems with students is not something extraordinary since they are the same everywhere, in every university," Konedarev said. "They are young and want to have fun." Sophomore Ivan Ivanov said Konedarev was rude to him when he came with his girlfriend in May to attend the commencement ceremony. He said Konedarev told them to leave the dormitory, without having explained that they have to pay to stay in Skaptopara after the end of the academic year. "Arben called the police to force us to move out," Ivanov said, specifying that they had agreed to leave shortly. Ivanov added he has not discussed the incident with other university authorities. Students like Ivanov have problems with a strict residence hall director because they want to get away with not following the rules, Konedarev said. He added he told Ivanov upfront that he has to have a reservation to stay in Skaptopara during commencement. "I am not here to like the students, I am here to follow the procedures of residence life in Skaptopara," Konedarev added. Director of Residence Life and Housing Todor Kehayov said he believes the administration will hire a qualified and experienced person who will replace Konedarev as a residence hall director. As a reply to the issue of what would happen if a new person is not hired before Konedarev leaves AUBG, Kehayov said: "We don't need a plan B. ... Judging by the number of applications, we will find the right person to do the job." At this point, the page advertising an open position for two residence hall directors, which had been posted on the AUBG website, is no longer online. Dean of Students Lydia Krise said there are many candidates for this position and several applicants have a western degree in student affairs. "The plan is to interview and get the best new hall director that we can, both for Skaptopara 1 and a new one in Skaptopara 3," Krise added. Both Kehayov and Krise said the transition will go smoothly. "The experience of the RAs will only help," Kehayov said. "The RAs are good people; they will create a new team and work well with the new residence hall director." Resident assistants said they think they will adjust to the new director quickly. "We created really close ties in the team and we will continue working that way no matter who the new director is," junior Lyudmila Uzunova, an RA in Skaptopara 1, said. Konedarev said he thinks the timing of his decision, namely at the beginning of the new academic year, will not be a problem for the university. "Nobody can tell me when to leave," he said. "I decided this is the right time to do it." Konedarev has worked at AUBG for 11 years. He spent seven years as a security guard and four years as a residence hall director. His last working day at the university will be Oct. 8. He said he submitted his resignation with one month advance notice. |
