![]() Illustration by Lum Ceku This article is an opinion piece and a review of the show. The information in it is not a quotation of any member of the More-Honors Academy.
The More-Honors 12 show was held on Friday, April 24. As usual, practically the whole AUBG community attended. As usual, there were not enough seats for everybody in Peyo Yavorov Hall, but nonetheless they sat and watched, from beginning to end, what the 25 More-Honors Academy members had prepared for the community. And now, the nominees in the category "How was More-Honors 12?" are: Simply-Amazing-Of-Course, Better-Than-Last-Year, Worse-Than-Last-Year, So-So, and Pretty-Bad. Before we tell you who the winner is, we will take you for a ride on a special talk show with our honorable guest, More-Honors himself - or herself, we are not exactly sure. Journalist (J): What was best about this year's show? M-H: I think the format of a talk show was a very good idea. Our host Igor Letina did an amazing job. At the beginning, the category winners seemed a bit shy, but they quickly understood what was expected of them. We tried to diversify it with commercial breaks, which the audience enjoyed quite a bit. Also, the clip for Oxymoron where we mocked the categories we dropped (Sports Person and Google) was very funny and well made. The clip for Mojo is another favorite of mine, though maybe most people thought it was too long and slow. At least it was different and expressive. And the clip for Dweeb the Mega Nerd also rocked - including a random surrealist element with the guys in towels jumping around an old computer and Diell Grazdhani smashing it in pieces in slow motion to "There are many things that I would like to SEND to you, but I can't right now." It was a great cover of Oasis's "Wonderwall" with the vocals of Daniel Ivanov. J: And what was the weakest point? M-H: We had technical problems at the beginning, and some clips were not done that well. Also, considering that not everybody was sitting comfortably and that there was no way to go to a restroom and come back inside, I guess we can say 2.5 hours of a show was a bit too long. But still, it's a once-a-year event. J: Do you consider yourself tall or short? M-H: I guess you're referring to the sketch we did. Come to think of it, maybe that was our strongest moment. Goran Dimitrovski was great. We're so happy he agreed to come up on stage for this sketch. We mock all sorts of things, and we are not afraid to do it, except of course when it comes to the musical, but some things are serious and we really wanted to support the new Gay-Straight Alliance at AUBG. When Goran said, "Some people think I am actually short, but I pretend to be tall," that was very well-said and gave me that nice feeling of something good and clever going on, something important. J: The only person who did not pick his award this year was the Oxymoron winner. Even the Lickafessor winner came on stage to pick up the statuette. But maybe the most striking one was President David Huwiler coming up to collect the Cheapass award. M-H: I was surprised, but I think it was only right that he did it. The students voted, you know. They wanted that. In fact, the administration as a nominee received the greatest single number of votes compared to any other nominee in all other categories. It was great that the president came out and picked up the award, ironically admitting that just like administrations all over the world, the AUBG one is "liked by all." If the students can openly vote the university's administration Cheapass, and the president can have enough sense of humor to come on stage and pick this specific award up , then I can say AUBG is not a bad place at all. Now, I don't know how funny this whole topic actually is, but during the show it was pretty interesting. J: And then you went on and gave the Lifetime Achievement to another member of the senior administration? M-H: Yes, we awarded it to Dean of Students Lydia Krise. She's been great and very helpful, not only towards More-Honors, but she's done a great deal of work for the students throughout the years, and after more than 15 years at AUBG, she deserves to be acknowledged by us. And as we announced at the show, she has never missed a More-Honors ceremony. J: Which award would you give yourself as a team? M-H: Well, Igor hinted it should be Lazy of the Year. But members of our team were nominated and won in quite a few categories: Petia Petrova for FARteest, Marina Ceprazova for Future Leader, Denitsa Charkova for Gossip... We got three out of 14. I'd give us Coolest Non Student, especially if we consider the last week before the show... But no, I wouldn't give Coolest Non Student this year to anyone else but its real winner. Valkata from Niki's, the little bistro near Skaptopara, was probably the one the audience applauded the most of all. I know we didn't manage to translate his speech very well, but at least most of the audience must have understood it. He seemed happy and there was no stopping him when he took the microphone. For those who did not understand: he expressed gratitude and pleasure to be there among all the AUBGers that he sees every day at the restaurant. J: One final question. An acquaintance of mine once said to me, "Tell me once, and I will believe you. Tell me two times and I'll begin having doubts. Tell me three times, and I will know you're lying." It seemed like one of the leitmotifs of your show was the issue of the SG money you got. You had $3,000 this year, double what you had last year, and people were curious about it. M-H: We did overexploit the subject a bit during the show. I don't know, people get so touchy about money here. We had a bigger budget than last year's; we used it for the show and stage lights and other special equipment. A show like that is expensive to make. Though we might have mentioned this subject on several occasions, you cannot deny that it's great to make fun of it. I mean that photoshoped image with the yachts with the More-Honors logo and Vasile Valcov's voice dramatically echoing in the clip about where the SG money went made people laugh. J: I agree. Well, thank you very much for appearing in our talk show tonight. It was a pleasure and the story would have been pretty boring without you. There's one last thing. I wanted to ask you if you can consider this story as my application essay for next year's More-Honors scholarship? M-H (laughing at my joke): I don't deal with that really. It's the regalia people that do it. Funny thing is, I think when it was announced, most people just thought the scholarship was a joke, and that's why only nine applied. The two lucky ones, Andrey Anastassov and Nikola Georgiev, really did win that 1,500-levs award in a very easy way, as Anguel Anguelov "Mostuna" said. Let's hope next year more people will apply. Oh, and if you're wondering, which you probably are because money is always a subject to wonder about, the award was split between the two so they got 750 levs each. J: Yes, I was wondering. Thank you. M-H: No problem. Now can you tell me who is the winner for "How was More-Honors 12"? Simply-Amazing-Of-Course? J: Yes, indeed, I can tell you. I cannot give you exact numbers now, but all in all people thought you were pretty good. So did I. Some were disappointed, but you cannot please everyone. Most important thing is you worked hard, as usual, and managed to offer something that is impressive, rare, and unique to AUBG. And you made people laugh once again, which is what you do best. |

Thanks for mentioning the MH scholarship. And, of course you can apply to MH scholarship with this article, but you have to submit it when the time comes :))
But thank you anyway. And I would have come up with something else if I were to apply.
Good luck! I think it's a good cause you have going with this scholarship. Keep it up!
