Andrey Gurov is an adjunct professor in the Business department who is teaching Risk Management and Principles of Microeconomics. Back in 1994, he began his studies in economics at Sofia University. After two years, he transferred to the Truman State University in Missouri, where he got his Bachelor of Science degree in Economics. He received his Ph.D. in Finance from the Vienna Graduate School of Finance.

What made you come to AUBG?

It so happens that I come from Blagoevgrad. I followed the first steps of this university and a lot of my teachers from English Language School later on became professors and started working at AUBG. It was basically the spring board for my career -- I created my first email account here, I used Internet for the first time, which was very useful for people at that time. Now, I am more than happy to close the circle and be able to give back to the students what I have learned in my past professional and academic experience.

What did you do before coming to teach at AUBG?

Besides all the studying, I also have a significant professional experience starting in 1999. I spent one year at Harris Bank in Chicago as a credit analyst. Then, in Vienna, my job was to design systems and methods for the quantification, analysis and management of credit risk for the Volksbank Group.  I spent six years there working my way up the ladder from a quantitative expert to head of group credit risk management. At the area of risk management, it is interesting the combination between real life and theory. So, basically, you are supposed to develop models which are useful in real life but still have a very good theoretical basis.

How long do you plan to stay here?

It was always a goal for me to start teaching here. It is very motivating and gives me a lot of personal satisfaction to be professor here. I would be very glad if I have the chance to stay at the AUBG for a longer period of time.

How do you think AUBG will contribute to your personal experience?

I have experienced a lot of variety in my academic and professional life. Considering my background, I want to teach the students to be very open to the world so that they can better integrate in different professional and cultural settings. In another way, it is also very helpful to me. Generations are changing fast and now I get to know how the current generation of AUBG students think and live, which is a bit different from how things were here, say, ten years ago. One of the greatest benefits of teaching is the exchange of ideas and experiences between students and professors.

What do you like doing in your spare time?

Well, I have two young sons, who are two and five years old, so I try to spend a lot of time with my family. Sports take also a significant part of my free time with skiing in the winter and golf in the summer, but also football, baseball, tennis.  I also like to read a lot.

Where do you see yourself in the next ten years?

The last 15 years have been very intense in terms of studying, working and teaching all at the same time.  At the moment it feels very rewarding to be able to teach at the AUBG and to also have enough time for my family. So I prefer to concentrate on my teaching and to enjoy the moment rather than to make plans for the future.

So you really like being in Bulgaria?

Yes, I have traveled a lot, experienced and lived in a lot of different countries but Bulgaria has always been very important for me. I never planned to stay abroad permanently and always knew that sooner or later I will be coming back to Bulgaria for good.
