How FlashNews came to be
Ilya Vedrashko: "In 1999, we used to have these two big newspapers, Vox and Aspecter. They would come out every three-four weeks, by which time whatever news they had would've gone stale. I had just been made a manager of Vox, and we decided we'd have the actual paper print deeper analytical or investigative and less time-sensitive stuff and send news updates more regularly, by e-mail. The name FlashNews comes from a section of Vox called -- surprise! -- Flash News, which was a compilation of brief updates on a bunch of things on one page. We took that section out of the newspaper and started e-mailing it around instead. Then for a number of reasons FlashNews got spun off into an independent organization, both newspapers eventually died off, and that's were we are today."
